5 Amazing Survival Video Games That Puts “Survival” In Focus

Survival is right now the most overused genre in video games and if you look at steam you will notice how every game developer is jumping onto creating a survival game and over the last few years players have realized that not every survival game get the “Survival” aspect right. Only some do and today we have listed down games that have truly embraced the true meaning of Survival in gaming,

Ark Survival Evolved

Ark’s ambition pulls it in the right direction with more force than its clunkiness tugs it the other way. It’s always more enjoyable to spend time with a game that tries something new and exciting, stumbling along the way, than a game that tries to tick focus group-inspired boxes. If that game also happens to simulate an entire prehistoric ecosystem, and produces bewildering emergent scenarios like clockwork, all the better. – PCGamesN
When I’m having a good time in ARK, I’m having a really good time. The problem is that those moments are usually one part to every nine parts menial grinding and crafting – especially at the later tech tiers. Having to repeat so much work after failing an attempt at a boss feels far too punishing, and some really dumb dinosaurs can take a lot of the challenge and sense of danger out of the many primal locations. Even with all of those quirks, however, I’m still hungry to play more after the 60 hours I’ve spent so far. – IGN

 The Long Dark

The Long Dark‘s long-in-the-making story mode was worth the wait. And with an eventual total of five episodes each looking to last between seven and ten hours, it looks like it may well prove a truly epic survival experience. – Post Arcade (National Post)
The art and the well-thought-through presentation make The Long Dark an excellent survival genre. The cold, the hunger and the danger of the Canadian countryside leave a big impression. It is too bad the story is not as well made. – Gamer.nl

Deep, brutal, and hauntingly atmospheric, The Long Dark is a survival game done right. – PC Gamer

Shelter 2

A more ambitious game than the first one, it’s still unique, poetic and all, but you still need to be in the right state of mind to appreciate it. – IGN Italia
A game both lovely and flawed. Just as its predecessor, Shelter 2 is a moving, beautiful experience. It’s also a bit too simple and short. The open world is a wonderful addition, but why is there so little to do in there? [Apr 2015] – Pelit (Finland)
Shelter 2 is an unique game about the uncertainty of life and the challenges of motherhood. Despite the few contents and a too simplistic gameplay, you will live a fantastic and emotionally involving experience. – Eurogamer Italy

 Don’t Starve

If you like survival games, if you enjoy Tim Burton-esque artwork, or if you’re just looking for an unforgiving challenge of a game, pick up Don’t Starve immediately. Pretty much everything about this game is fantastic, and you’ll undoubtedly fall in love with it. Cheat Code Central
Don’t Starve starts off slow and punishing and continues to get even harder as you play. Its merciless difficulty coupled with its monotonous gameplay can leave some players feeling frustrated and bored. Those who enjoy a good challenge, however, will relish in the satisfaction they’ll get when they manage to outlive their previous record or clear the game’s evil Adventure mode. It may not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for a roguelike game filled with charm and challenge, be sure not to miss Don’t Starve. – GamesRadar+

This War Of Mine

One of the best all-around games I’ve played all year. A crisp, consistent atmosphere, intuitive gameplay, and surprising depth create a fantastic experience. – Twinfinite

This War of Mine is probably one of the first modern titles capable of mixing mechanics with a strong message without breaking the ludo-narrative dissonance. A rogue-like masterpiece and one of the best indie games of the year. – 3DJuegos
The reality of war, hammered home through stark visuals and tight resource management, in a game where just surviving another day is winning. – Critical Hit
