5 Awesome Indie Games You Should Play Immediately
The Indie game genre has been taking off over the past few years, and with good reason. The fact that small, independent game developers are able to create amazing games that are able to compete with the huge developers like Ubisoft and EA is great for gaming in general. Every day there are new games with fresh concepts and ideas hitting the market. This flood of games and ideas is not only great because it rapidly provides us, the consumers, with fun and interesting games, but it also benefits the video game industry by creating more competition and concepts for other developers to gain inspiration from.
It’s good for me, it’s good for you, it’s good for everybody! Here are 5 awesome Indie games you should play immediately:
ARK: Survival Evolved
ARK: Survival Evolved is an open-world, MMO survival game fully equipped with all of the qualities that you would expect from the genre… plus dinosaurs. Players build bases, craft items, tame or battle dinosaurs, and work together to create their own unique narratives in diverse environments filled with massive prehistoric beasts.
“Ark’s ambition pulls it in the right direction with more force than its clunkiness tugs it the other way. It’s always more enjoyable to spend time with a game that tries something new and exciting, stumbling along the way, than a game that tries to tick focus group-inspired boxes. If that game also happens to simulate an entire prehistoric ecosystem, and produces bewildering emergent scenarios like clockwork, all the better.”- PCGamesN
“ARK is a good survival game with a great setting. It’s one of those titles where you can spend hours trying to survive, while building a house and taming a dinosaur, and even though it still feels a little bit like in early access, if you like the concept you’ll probably enjoy it.” – Vandal
“After a long early acces Ark Surival Evolved became a gigantic game in terms of content. Hundreds of hours will be spend building bases, taming dinos en making new friends (or enemies).” – XGN
Inside is a puzzle-platformer game that tells an amazing story while not really telling the player anything. The game is set in a stark dystopian world that grows in unexpected ways as the player runs right, solving incredible puzzles, jumping climbing, and dying in some surprisingly brutal ways along the way.
“By entering the world of Inside, you’ll forget your own world and everything that’s been going on in it. From beautiful art design to engaging gameplay, thrilling atmosphere to marvelous story, everything about this game is truly exceptional. Do not miss it.” – BaziCenter
“It’s all an experience worth savoring and enjoying throughout the brief five-hour playtime. Much like Limbo before it, Inside is a simple game, utilizing classic tried-and-true mechanics to quietly tell a strong story.” New York Daily News
“Playdead’s Inside is one of those rare games that has to be experienced first hand in order to understand its importance. Rest assured, you’d be hard pressed to find another game that’s equally brilliant and beautiful.” – We Got This Covered
Rocket League is the best rocket car soccer game that ever existed! I know that’s a very specific genre that I just made up but, in seriousness, it is an engaging and fun competitive experience. The physics are near flawless. Hitting perfectly-weighted balls that dip into the top corner at the last minute is a sensation that will keep you coming back.
“It’s a blast to play and it only gets better as skills improve over time and as the competition ramps up. It’s a game that everyone, whether they’re big into sports video games or just can’t seem to get into them, will really enjoy.” – Sporting News
“In its exhilarating mix of chaos and control, Rocket League is as good a multiplayer game as any this year.” – Telegraph
“Amazing.” – GamesBeat
No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky caught a lot of flak when it was released for not living up to it’s hype and bugs. All negative press aside, I still believe that it is a unique procedurally-generated space exploration experience unlike any other. Make sure you have “Space Oddity” by David Bowie queued up for this one!
“No game, film, book or otherwise has been more effectively in capturing what the experience of exploring the universe must be. Lonely, hostile and unforgiving, Hello Game’s effort works so hard to reject the convention on how games are made that it’s easy to understand why people expecting something more traditional might come away disappointed.” – Digitally Downloaded
“This game is unique, unbelievable big and extremely well made.” – XGN
“No Man’s Sky is no doubt a magnificent feat in game development. I am left humbled by all that I have seen and intend on continuing my journey in an attempt to see as much as possible, well aware I will never see it all. Space has its hooks in me and I don’t think I’ll ever want them to relinquish their hold.” – Twinfinite
Stardew Valley might look pretty simplistic on the surface, but in actuality, it is a much more profound experience that you might assume from the screenshots. The reason why I add this game to the list, and what makes it so amazing in my opinion is that it was made by one person. The engine, story, art, sound, all of it was done by one person. I find that to be incredible. It’s also a great game to boot, so check it out!
“It’s a remarkable game, warmly familiar, yet fresh as a daisy. In a year where indie games have stepped up to the plate and hit home runs-a-plenty, Stardew Valley is the one that knocks it out of the park and into a neighbouring city.” – Playstation Universe
“The constant churn of daily activities may prove thankless and repetitive for those impatient and unwilling to immerse themselves, but if you surrender yourself to Stardew Valley and dig deeper beneath the surface you’ll find one of the best, most impactful games you play this year, homage or not.” – TheSixthAxis
“It’s all centered around whatever it is you want to accomplish that day. And that’s truly what makes Stardew Valley such a lovely experience, it encourages you to go out and be the best you can be, in whichever task that brings you the most joy. Stardew Valley motivates naturally, with blissful optimism.” – GameSpot
