Why Old Video Games Genre Is Dying

Here I am not referring to the very very old ips like Final Fight, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, Mystical Ninja, or even Vagrant Story or Bushido Blade, since I will cover these gems in a separate article, because first they deserve their own and second most of the younger generation will not remember or know them. In this article I will cover some of the IPs, which existed until the Dreamcast, PS2 and Gamecube era and also some of last gen as I think they are not going to be re-released at anytime in this generation as they are no longer considered as AAA title.

Honestly, I didn’t know how to categorize some games. First I started by the company name and then I realized that some of those companies are no longer exist or they were merged with other companies or the ip itself was sold to another company, so I decided to go by genres. Even though it was still difficult for me to list what game under what genre, since those types are no longer applicable to the new generation of players. So at last I have decided to cover one inapplicable genre only, which is Arcade Shooting Games on game consoles.

Arcade Shooting Games like Virtua Cop, The House of the Dead, Confidential Mission, and Time Crisis, all of them are considered be under First Person Shooter (FPS), however today’s FPS are far different from our time.By today’s standard FPS means Call of Duty  and Battlefield games. Although I don’t exclude our time from having such games on consoles like Doom and Quake, but they were rare. Today If we show light gun games to the current young generation most probably they will list them under Virtual Reality (VR) games and mos probably they will not play them directly on TV. In addition might not spend extra bucks just to buy two or even one light gun to play the above games..

On the other hand, Capcom did well last generation when motion gaming was pumping and released two great games on the Wii and later on PS3 and Xbox 360. First game was Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and the second was Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles and it really made me feel happy to see such good games and such genre are still alive  and again two person locally play together like the old days. Nevertheless after that nothing has been released till date and except some light gun games, which are exclusive to  VR.

What do you think? is it better for this kind on genre to be exclusive for VR and die on the console? Or you miss it and would like new quality games to be released?
