The PS4 is a beast of a console. It’s wiping the floor with the competition and is already home to loads of classic video games. The machine is only in its fourth year on the market, though, and with the PS4 Pro giving gamers an optional mid-gen upgrade, there should be another three or four years left in it yet.
Horizon: Zero Dawn
If there’s a poster child for PS4 in the early part of 2017, it’s Horizon: Zero Dawn. In development at Guerrilla Games, the studio behind the Killzone series, Horizon has looked the part ever since its reveal way back in June 2015. Killzone has always impressed with flashy visuals too, though, so it was right to be a little cautious about Horizon’s overall quality. As the release date approaches and more and more of the game is revealed, things are certainly looking promising and it’s time to get excited.
In a break from Guerrilla’s usual output, Horizon is a third-person action adventure game with role-playing elements. Players take control of Aloy, a hunter who must survive in a world ruled by robotic creatures, many of which tower way above her. Rather than hunting these machines for food, fallen robo creatures can be harvested for parts.
The Last Of Us: Part Two
The sequel to The Last of Us, one of the PS3’s best games and possibly one of the finest games ever released, is a way off. Announced at Sony’s PlayStation Experience event at the end of 2016, The Last of Us: Part Two immediately jumped to the top of millions of most wanted lists, even if we don’t know a great deal about it yet.
Set five years after the conclusion of the original game, this time around the main playable character is Ellie, now 19 years old. Old grizzled Joel will feature, looking over Ellie. It’s unclear what state the world is in, the health of the main characters, or what the game’s story will be.
God Of War
Chances are you’ll fall into one of two camps when it comes to Sony’s upcoming new take on God of War. You’ll either love it completely and be super excited about what developer Sony Santa Monica is doing, or you’ll wish they had stuck to the old formula but still accept that new God of War looks mighty good.
In this new God of War, our blood-thirsty hero and god killer Kratos has a son. In the small look we’ve had of the game to date, Kratos is very much the dad, protecting his son and teaching him how to hunt. Details on exactly how the combat works haven’t been revealed, so it’s unclear if there will be the intense battles against strings of enemies, or indeed how large some of the boss-like foes will be, but the sensible money is on lots of the series’ classic tropes returning, just with a new spin.
Hideo Kojima knows how to build hype, and with the help of Sony his latest game is certainly doing just that. Details on what Death Stranding is are pretty obtuse, leading to a million fan theories that feature dissections of everything released. What’s clear is that Kojima has called in his celebrity friends Norman Reedus (Walking Dead), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) and Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) to appear in the game.
Death Stranding is an action game set in an open world environment, but specific gameplay details are nonexistent at this time. Sony will be keen to promote the game at every opportunity, but chances are that no one will be able to buy the game for quite some time. For much of 2016 Kojima was working out which game engine to use, finally settling on Guerrilla Games’ Decima. Having been the engine responsible for the gorgeous Killzone: Shadow Fall and Horizon Zero Dawn, it’s no surprise what has been seen so far of Death Stranding looks marvelous.
