Best Video Games To Play Within A Video Game

What’s better than playing a game? Playing a game and discovering the game you’re playing has another tucked away inside.

Crash Bandicoot – Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

A more recent entry in this list, Uncharted 4 saw Naughty Dog’s return not only to finish of the most epic Indiana Jones inspired, globe-trotting treasure romp, but also the return to one of the most beloved games of the original PlayStation. The original Crash Bandicoot.

The icon of the Sony PlayStation, Crash Bandicoot is one of the founding fathers of 3D platforming and is an absolute classic in the genre. Simplistic in nature, the entire game sees you running towards the camera, jumping gaps, smashing crates and collecting apples. Insanely simple, but incredibly fun. And seeing it in Uncharted was not only one of the most nostalgic moments of 2016, but brought the character into a new light and to a new audience.

Liar’s Dice – Red Dead Redemption

From Poker to throwing horseshoes or inventing that knife game where you attempt to jump between fingers without stabbing yourself, Red Dead Redemption is full of gambling opportunities. But none are as great as Liar’s Dice.

Essentially, everyone has a cup with five dice in it. You shake the cup, slam it on the table and you have to make a bet as to how many of a certain number are face up. Get called on your bluff or call someone’s bluff falsely, and you lose. Last person standing wins. Simple.

Red Menace – Fallout 4

Donkey Kong… cough… I mean Red Menace is a game that is very reminiscent of the original Donkey Kong, but is totally not a rip off because instead of the giant ape it’s an alien. And instead of an Italian plumber in overalls, it’s a vault-tech boy in a skin-tight suit.

Completely different in every way possible.Being the first game cartridge the player has and is available right from the point you collect a pipboy, the game is easily one of the most fun in the entire wasteland. Mimicking Donkey Kong perfectly in a fitting homage to the original, the game is just pure fun and a call back to one of the games that set the groundwork for all games.

Gwent – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Relying on the simple premise of mimicking the strategy of war, Gwent sees players place cards attributed with values and special powers into three different playing fields: Melee, Ranged and Siege. Being incredibly simple, the game can be played simply by hammering card after card, but if players invest time, learning the strategy to absolutely decimate your opponent beyond the scope of practicality can be even more rewarding.

Not to mention the innate completionists within all of us as the game hints at more cards across the world, starting your quest to collect every last one of them to be the best player going. The entire world could be going to end, with Ciri about to be gutted, but an innkeeper has a rare card, you know where your priorities lie!
