Another World War 2 Game But This Time It’s Beautiful

A new World War 2 shooter is in the works for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game, Battalion 1944, is a multiplayer shooter from UK studio Bulkhead Interactive that aims to capture the “core of classic multiplayer shooters” while using the “most advanced industry technology.” The announcement trailer below contains some gameplay footage, but note that what you’re seeing represents the game in its pre-alpha state.

Battalion 1944 runs on Unreal Engine 4 and lets you fight in real-world places such as Carentan and Bastogne. Some of the weapons include the Kar98, M1 Garand, and Thompson.

“In short, Battalion 1944 is an infantry-based first person shooter with an emphasis on raw skill,” Bulkhead said. “No grinding, no exosuits,’ just you and your skill as a player.”

Battalion 1944 will also offer a feature called BattleRank, which is a global competition system. You have the option of joining a battalion and then competing in a season to earn cosmetic rewards for your character, weapons, and accessories.

In the announcement video, developers also explain that Battalion 1944 will use dedicated servers and employ anti-cheat measures in an effort to create as fair a playing field as possible.

Bulkhead is raising money for Battalion 1944 on Kickstarter, asking for £100,000 to get the project off the ground. Funding just started today, February 2, and closes on March 3. You can guarantee yourself a copy of the game, which is expected to launch in May 2017, by pledging at least £13. Head to the Kickstarter page to see all of the other pledge tiers and rewards.

The last Call of Duty game set in World War 2 was 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War.

If you’d like to see a future Call of Duty game return to World War II, you’re not alone. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare developer Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey would also like to play a game set during that time period, he said in an interview back in 2014.

“I think a next generation game with the latest production values and robustness in a World War II setting like Band of Brothers would be amazing,” he said at the time.
