Fallout’s Some Of The Most Creepiest Vaults Experiments
The post-apocalyptic world of Fallout is home to some truly terrifying things. Around every corner is a Deathclaw waiting to dismember you. In every abandoned factory, a pack of raiders eager to shoot you dead and steal your precious coffee cups and pencils. It’s a bleak existence for any lone wanderer, but for Fallout fans, these horrors are commonplace – almost run-of-the-mill
If you want truly terrifying post-apocalyptic tales, you have to look inside your would-be shelters: The Vault-Tec Vaults.
Each of these tombs carries a dark secret; an experiment engineered by the twisted minds at Vault-Tec. Below are 7 of the most horrifying vault stories, as taken from Fallout 1-4 and supplementary Fallout material.
A Man and His Puppets – Vault 77
The door on Vault 77 was sealed just moments after a sole inhabitant had entered. But he wasn’t completely alone. He had been issued a crate of human-esque puppets to help him stave off his loneliness.
Over the course of the next several months, he befriended these puppets, lending each it’s own distinct personality and history. For a time, he considered them his only friends.
As he began to lose his grip on reality, one of the puppets began speaking to him, convincing him that they’d murdered one of the other puppets and that they needed to flee the vault at the earliest opportunity. So, when the vault door finally swung open our hero, now known as The Puppet Man, wandered into the wastes with his puppet friend where the two rode atop a giant irradiated ant, never to bee seen again.
Sacrificial Vault Dwellers – Vault 11
In Vault 11, vault dwellers were encouraged to sacrifice one of their own each year to a computer overlord, or risk having the entire vault’s life support systems shut down.
Their Overseer was the first to go, and an election process was instituted. Democracy was short lived however, as the survivors divided themselves into factions, which ultimately resulted in a civil war. The carnage left just five survivors.
These five unfortunate souls decided that a death pact was their only means of escape. They would end their lives at the same time, ensuring that no further sacrifices were necessary. In a twist of fate, this was exactly what the computer wanted and as a reward for their selflessness the door to the vault was opened. Wracked with guilt, four of the five survivors decided to follow through with their suicide pact. The fate of the last is still a mystery.
Virtual Torture – Vault 112
Perhaps the most infamous of all the vault experiments, Vault 112 was the brainchild of Dr. Stanislaus Braun.
Braun constructed virtual reality pods for each of his vault’s residents. In these pods, each subject was to live for eternity in a suburban utopia, free from the stress and horror of the world outside. However, somewhere along the way Braun snapped.
He began to appear in the dweller’s virtual worlds as a murderous little girl. He stalked his victims and murdered them in their waking dreams, and then resurrected their psyches, only to kill them over and over again
Insanity by Bad Comedy – Vaults 55 and 56
Most vaults were fortunate enough to be stocked with entertaining holotopes. Music, films and other media that helped remind vault dwellers of a happier time.
This wasn’t the case with the dual experiments in Vaults 55 and 56. Those unfortunate enough to live in Vault 55 were stripped of all entertainment tapes while the subterranean survivors of Vault 56 were left with only a handful of tapes featuring a truly horrendous comedian.
It was predicted that Vault 56 would fall before 55, but the results were forever lost to the wastes
An Old-Fashioned Mass Drugging – Vault 106
Ten days after Vault 106’s doors were sealed, psychoactive drugs were pumped into the vault through the air ducts.
The Overseer was aware of the plan and instructed security guards to reassure the vault dwellers that everything was fine and that the drugs were meant to calm the populace. Over time, the men and women within started to show signs of insanity and violent behavior.
By the time player finds this vault in Fallout 3, many of it’s inhabitants were completely insane or dead. In fact, the hallucinogenic drugs are still flowing into the vault’s dusty corridors when players stumble onto it.
Red vs. Blue – Vault 19
Paranoia was the order of the day in Vault 19. At the outset of this particular experiment, survivors were divided into two groups, Red and Blue, each with its own Overseer. Text logs suggest that the end goal of this Vault’s trial was to induce anxiety and distrust through peaceful means.
High pitched noises and subliminal messaging were transmitted to vault inhabitants in a constant barrage. As was the case in several other Vault-Tec experiments, the result was psychosis and aggression.
No one knows the fate of Vault 19’s citizens. It’s suggested that the two factions turned on each other, or that Fire Geckos breached the Vault, but these theories were never corroborated. When raiders came across the Vault sometime later, they found it completely abandoned.
Death By Fungus – Vault 22
Vault 22 was equipped with advanced agricultural technologies and built to be the first self-sustainable Vault. Over time, crops were grown and plant life was abundant, despite the Vault’s subterranean setting.
Unfortunately, the survivors employed a seemingly harmless entomopathogenic fungus for pest control. What they didn’t realize what that this particular fungus could, in fact, infect humans. As the fungal spores spread, the human hosts began to develop pneumonia, and eventually death rates started climbing.
But that wasn’t the end for the infected. The fungal spores resurrected their hosts as highly aggressive and disfigured creatures, whose sole compulsion was to continue the spread of their spores. The infection spread throughout the vault, overcoming all it’s inhabitants. Eventually, the fungus creatures made their way out onto the Wastelands in an effort to administer their parasitic disease to other survivors.
These are only a few examples of some of the atrocities found within the Vault-Tec Vaults. Who knows what other horror stories lay waiting to be uncovered out in the Wastelands? If you’ve uncovered more horrific tales out in The Commonwealth, let us know and good luck out there, wanderer.
